Reactive hyperemia was diminished when blood of varying oxygen content was infused into the vascular bed distal to an occluded coronary artery. The degree of response appeared to be related to the oxygen content of the infused sample. However, plasma and saline infusions also caused a reduction in reactive hypermia. It is therefore possible to conclude that the prevention of the fall in intravascular pressure plays an important role in the regulation of vascular smooth muscle tone in the dog heart.
