Personality characteristics and mental health of university students.

The selective review of the enormous literature on student personality development and mental health shows that three sets of variables have been found to influence the personality of the university student. These variables include pre-university factors, contemporary experience in the university and the status of the student as an adolescent or young adult. As very little information is presently available on the psychology of the African university student, there is urgent need for systematic research in this area.
