This article is a description and evaluation of the University of Utah Medical Center's effort to enhance patient care through the establishment of a hospital staff human relations program. The program, focused on select hospital staff, aimed at greater staff awareness and sensitivity to the problems and needs of patients resulting from hospitalization. Because of the positive initial response, the program has been extended and has become a major staff development and education project. This program was presented by a team of social workers and represented a new contribution to the health care system by social work.
