Piercing constitutes a medical problem due to infections originating from contamination at the penetration of the different tissues. Lack of clear guidelines adjusted to piercing activities interferes with the quality of supervision and makes it differ between municipalities. The National Board of Health and Welfare exercise the overall responsibilities for public health problems related to piercing. A training programme for persons performing piercing should be established in order to reduce the risk of infections.
