Although from the very beginning Rudolf Virchow, the father of cellular pathology, laid emphasis on disturbance of function, for many years the attention of pathologists was concentrated on the changes in structure produced by disease. The structures involved were the nucleus and cytoplasm. Now that the infinite complexity of cellular structure has been revealed by the electron microscope and cytochemical technique, attention has again been focused on disturbance of function, which alone is responsible for the symptoms of the sick person who seeks help from the doctor.
