Demographic and mortality analyses were performed for all Medicare black (26,100) and white (31,859) ESRD patients from the USRDS database who were incident between 1977 and 1988, and for whom the reported cause of ESRD was hypertension. Over the years 1977-88, the incidence rates increased markedly. The median age for both black and white incident patients also increased, while the percent of patients who were black decreased over time. Percent survival at one year and five years after onset of ESRD was significantly higher and statistically significant in black patients whose ESRD developed in the middle and older ages, compared to white patients of the same age group.
