The management of breastfeeding can have a powerful effect on its outcome. To promote success, the nurse must use strategies that are based on an understanding of lactation and the breastfeeding infant. The nurse also must guard against strategies that, although intended to be helpful, sabotage the delicate breastfeeding relationship. Success-promoting and sabotaging strategies are discussed.
