Localised infection and septicaemia are recognised complications of central venous catheterisation. This paper investigates the influence of dressing type on rates of infection by a review of published literature. Semi-permeable transparent dressings are widely used but evidence is accumulating that they increase the risk of infection as compared to dry gauze dressings.
