This longitudinal study focuses on the improvement of understanding the development of infants with perinatal complications. 38 infants with perinatal complications requiring intensive care for at least two weeks and their parents were examined shortly after birth and up to the age of 3 years. A number of biological and psychosocial data were collected. By means of cluster analysis based on data collected from children and families during the first three month three groups were obtained. After three years, children differed significantly in many developmental areas according to this grouping. A second cluster analysis based on three years follow-up data yielded four clusters which were characteristically related to the original ones. The results are discussed using a transactional perspective.
