This article presents a diagnostic protocol that can help managers assess the causes of an individual subordinate's performance problems. The roles of shared performance expectations, shared perceptions of effectiveness, motivation, and ability and skill are reviewed as potential reasons for poor performance. Situational factors and the nature of a subordinate's work or job are also analyzed. Specific tactics addressing these factors are presented with the intent of improving the subordinate's overall performance.
