Clinicians should clearly understand the magnitude of the clinical benefits attributable to the treatment of hypertension in the elderly so that appropriate tradeoffs can be made between benefits and side effects. Potential types of overtreatment of elevated blood pressure in older persons include inaccurate measurement technique, insufficient numbers of readings, and too great a lowering of blood pressure.
