A new enantioselective acylation catalyst (Cl-PIQ), designed to provide enhanced pi-stacking with benzylic and cinnamyl alcohol substrates, was found to give considerably increased reaction rates and selectivities compared with the first-generation catalyst CF(3)-PIP. [reaction: see text]
