The tasks of the family doctor in preparing an elderly patient for an impending elective operation are manifold. In addition to the medical problems, personal, organizational, logistic and humanitarian challenges have to be met and mastered, with the necessary competence and with empathy. A further important aspect is appropriate communication between family doctor and hospital. This encompasses the provision of the patient's complete medical records, with the aim of avoiding unnecessary diagnostic examinations/procedures and ensuring the most effective care possible.
