Like many health visitors Robyn Pound felt uncomfortable when clients threatened or smacked their children, yet seldom felt able to broach the subject as a topic for health promotion. The mother who raises her hand in threat to her toddler is demonstrating a method of management which may well be stacking up problems for the future. Every child needs to learn in a warm and encouraging environment which fosters self esteem. Having clarified in her own mind why parents should not hit their children she describes how she has gone public.
