[Bone densitometry: technical principles and practical value].

X-ray dual photon absorptiometry has replaced isotopic mono and dual photon absorptiometry in the assessment of metabolic bone diseases. This method is a valuable tool for epidemiologic studies. Individual examinations give poor in vivo accuracy and precision. Further technical improvements are needed to give bone densitometry a predictive value for osteoporotic risk.
