Abstract

Dyadic topic maintenance seems to be a main aspect of enhancing the development in play. It is promoted by a responsive maternal style adjusted to the child's aims and behaviors. Parents of handicapped children tend to provide a less effective interaction pattern. Data from 20 mentally retarded preschool children show a high degree of maternal directiveness. There were significant differences in the child's cooperation depending on different types of directives. The children complied more often when they were linked to the child's own topic, were concerned with the same attentional focus and combined with gestural cues. These observations should be used for the interactional guidance of parents with mentally retarded children.
