Motivation factors in a student's choice of nursing as a career were the focus of this study. There was a three-fold purpose: definition of nursing, reasons for choosing nursing, and who/what influenced their choice. A questionnaire was developed to collect data from a random national sample of nine BSN and 11 ADN NLN-accredited schools. The five most frequent responses to the question "What does nursing mean to you?" were: caring, personal growth, illness focus, professionalism, and job security. The most frequently reported reasons for choosing nursing were: nurturance, emotional needs, employment opportunities, financial benefits, and interest in science. Practicing nurses were identified most frequently as influencing students' image of nursing/choice of nursing. Nursing continues to be perceived as a caring profession as well as one that offers many personal benefits.
本研究聚焦于学生选择护理作为职业的动机因素。研究有三个目的：界定护理、选择护理的原因以及谁/什么影响了他们的选择。设计了一份问卷，从全国随机抽取的9所护理学学士（BSN）和11所护理学副学士（ADN）且获美国护理联盟（NLN）认证的学校收集数据。对于“护理对你意味着什么？”这个问题，最常见的五个回答是：关怀、个人成长、关注疾病、专业素养和工作保障。选择护理最常被提及的原因是：养育他人、情感需求、就业机会、经济利益以及对科学的兴趣。执业护士被认为是对学生的护理形象/护理选择影响最大的群体。护理继续被视为一个充满关怀的职业，也是一个能带来诸多个人益处的职业。
