General practitioners (GPs) can have a significant role to play in the management of individuals with long-term neurological conditions (LTNC). This paper looks at various roles and responsibilities of GPs in the management of these patients.
This paper is based on a Medline literature search using the key words 'general practitioner;''rehabilitation;''long-term;' and 'neurological'.
The findings are broadly divided into diagnostic, supportive and palliative roles.
GPs have a lot to offer individuals with LTNC, but recent changes in the way they work, especially in the UK, may hamper their role.
