The size frequency distribution and number of secretory granules in the opaque zone midgut cells of the stablefly Stomoxys calcitrans have been determined using several independent methods. Average mean secretory granule diameter is 0.45 microm. Mean number of secretory granules per cell is 28,560. The diameter of the granules is compared to the size of secretory granules found in complementary vertebrate tissues and the consequences for the cell of the differences in the size of the granules is discussed.
