Although strongly recommended as a matter of clinical governance for nurses and other health service professionals, supervision is not universally and robustly in place. This article outlines the 4S model--structure, skills, support and sustainability. This first puts in place a managerial structure, then teaches a solution-focused approach and skills to volunteer supervisors, as well as ensuring support and sustainability.
