The review deals with the classification of the central serotoninergic receptors based on the data of the radioligand studies. The localization of the receptors and the biochemical, electrophysiological and behavioral effects mediated by the activation of different types of the central serotoninergic receptors are considered. The involvement of the serotoninergic mechanisms of the brain in the anxiolytic effect of buspirone and the related compounds are discussed as well as in the antipsychotic and antianxiety effects of neuroleptics.
