Although Vibrio Cholera and several other enterotoxigenic bacteria such as the enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli produce secretory diarrhoea by exactly the same mechanism, cholera is much more severe. It is proposed that this difference in severity may be because while the alkaline diarrhoeal fluid produced in these conditions is optimal for the growth of Vibrio cholera, E. coli and other enterotoxigenic bacteria are inhibited.
尽管霍乱弧菌和其他几种产肠毒素细菌,如产肠毒素大肠杆菌,通过完全相同的机制导致分泌性腹泻,但霍乱更为严重。有人提出,这种严重程度的差异可能是因为在这些情况下产生的碱性腹泻液对霍乱弧菌的生长最为适宜,而大肠杆菌和其他产肠毒素细菌则受到抑制。
