With HIV infection, a struggle between virus and host begins. Even though the eventual outcome seems predetermined, in most patients HIV may remain relatively nonpathogenic as long as the immune system can suppress it. A key question is whether host antiviral activity eventually breaks down or whether the virus mutates into strains that can destroy the immune system.
