Malonic dialdehyde (MDA) crosslinking of complementary chains of DNA is suggested. It contributes to the stabilization of the DNA helix, making its replication impossible. MDA is considered as a cell division inhibitor. The MDA-producing process (lipid peroxidation) is considered to be a normal strictly controlled in vivo process. Control of rest and proliferation alternations in normal cells and its impairment in transformed cells are discussed in terms of the proposed idea.
