The use of radiation therapy (RT) to treat adrenal tumors has historically been limited by the risk of normal tissue toxicity, given the proximity of the adrenals to radiosensitive structures, such as the kidney, stomach, intestine, and spinal cord. However, contemporary techniques have made RT safe and effective for use in the management of adrenal carcinoma and adrenal metastases. Data on recent advances in the use of RT to treat adrenocortical carcinoma and adrenal metastases are reviewed, in both surgical and non-surgical settings.
