Because patients are spending less time in the hospital, nurses must use specific techniques to address visual loss and assist low-vision patients with discharge planning. A majority of low-vision patients can distinguish the color red; this can be used to code the tops of medication bottles. When speaking to a low-vision patient, talk softly and teach information in accordance with the patient's comprehensive ability. Attending to the tactile sense should be incorporated into daily care.
