A treatment-resistant inpatient group with coexisting personality disorders, Axis II illness (DSM-III) and Axis I illness (DSM-III), were treated with a combination of psychoanalytic psychotherapy plus biologic treatment (medication or electroconvulsive therapy). Seventy-three per cent improved with combined treatment.
