The potentialities of bismuth-sulfite-agar (BSA) medium as a differentiating medium for the isolation of Y. enterocolitica and the related species have been under study. Y. enterocolitica colonies in BSA had a characteristic appearance and consistency. 7 Y. enterocolitica and 2 Y. frederiksenii strains have been isolated in 4.7% of various environmental specimens studied with the use of the BSA medium. BSA appears to be a promising medium for the isolation of Yersinia from the clinical material as well, since this medium is widely used at bacteriologic laboratories for the isolation of Salmonellae.
