My memoirs start with a description of the different spiritual climates in the early psychoanalytic centers of Vienna and Berlin. Whereas Berlin was enthusiastic and ready for new explorations, Vienna was bound tightly to Freud's vision. In the United States, tensions between orthodoxy and new ventures soon led to many organizational splits and finally to the creation of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis, a forum for new ideas, free of ideological restrictions.
