Many feel that lobular carcinoma in situ is a marker for future development of invasive cancer in other areas of the breast. There also seems to be a substantial incidence of bilaterality in LCIS. Mammography is of limited value in the diagnosis because it cannot distinguish between LCIS and benign disease. Treatment is by no means clearcut. The author surveys five options, and outlines her own usual course of action.
