Low-income adults are considered to be a group at high risk for suicide. We sought to examine the effect of type D personality and other socio-demographic factors on suicidality in low-income, middle-aged Koreans.
In total, 306 low-income, middle-aged Koreans [age: 49.16±5.24 (40-59) years, 156 males, 150 females] were enrolled from the Korean National Basic Livelihood Security System. Socio-demographic data, including employment status, income, health, marital status, and educational attainment, were gathered. Beck's 19-item Scale for Suicidal Ideation (SSI) was applied to evaluate suicidality, and the DS14 was used to assess type D personality.
Unemployment (p<0.01) and absence of spouse (p=0.03) predicted higher SSI scores independent of other socioeconomic factors. All type D personality scores [i.e., negative affectivity (NA), social inhibition (SI), and total score] predicted higher SSI scores independent of all socioeconomic factors (all, p<0.001). Subjects with type D personality had higher SSI scores (p<0.001), and the association between suicidality and socio-demographic factors (employment or physical health) could be found only in subjects without type D personality.
Type D personality was a risk factor for suicide in low-income Koreans, independently from socio-economic factors. In addition, the socio-demographic factors were less prominently associated with suicidality in those with type D personality.

共纳入 306 名韩国低收入中年人群（年龄：49.16±5.24 岁，男性 156 名，女性 150 名），来自韩国国家基本生活保障系统。收集社会人口统计学数据，包括就业状况、收入、健康、婚姻状况和教育程度。采用贝克自杀意念 19 项量表（SSI）评估自杀倾向，使用 DS14 评估 D 型人格。
失业（p<0.01）和无配偶（p=0.03）独立于其他社会经济因素预测更高的 SSI 评分。所有 D 型人格评分[即负性情感（NA）、社交抑制（SI）和总分]独立于所有社会经济因素预测更高的 SSI 评分（均 p<0.001）。具有 D 型人格的个体具有更高的 SSI 评分（p<0.001），并且自杀倾向与社会人口因素（就业或身体健康）之间的关联仅在没有 D 型人格的个体中可见。
D 型人格是韩国低收入人群自杀的一个危险因素，独立于社会经济因素。此外，在具有 D 型人格的个体中，社会人口因素与自杀倾向的关联不那么明显。
