The onset of most cases of herpes zoster is usually sudden and unexpected. A precipitating factor is seldom obvious. Depressed cellular immunity or an underlying neoplasm are found in only a small number of patients. The relationship between trauma and reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus is uncertain and most of the published cases follow trivial external injury.
