A new strategy for cyclopenta[]furan synthesis mediated by hypervalent iodine(III) has been described. The approach employs diacetoxyiodobenzene-induced initial dehydrogenation to a putative trienone intermediate and triggered sequential cycloisomerization to form the cyclo-penta[]furan targets.
