Today's technology makes it possible to divide the raw product blood into its single cellular components with a high degree of purity. Therefore each transfusion can be tailored for the single patient. The rules for the support with red blood cells and platelets are well defined. The role of granulocyte transfusions needs further investigations because of the still existing gap between requirement and production. Neocyte preparations and the procurement of hematopoietic stem cells from the peripheral blood are promising developments, but further improvements of the techniques are necessary.
