Mammalian oocytes grow and undergo meiosis within ovarian follicles. Oocytes are arrested at the first meiotic prophase, being controlled or influenced by follicular somatic cells. Under the influence of gonadotropins, immature oocytes resume meiosis. During meiotic progression, some cytoplasmic changes occur, so-called cytoplasmic maturation. However, porcine follicular oocytes vary greatly in developmental competence. The present review summarizes recent studies highlighting the importance of cumulus cells in maintaining the developmental ability and in reorganizing the cytoskeleton and organelles of porcine oocytes. Factors affecting wide variation of the nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation observed in the porcine oocytes are discussed. (Reprod Med Biol 2006; : 183-194).
