A highly fatal disease of parrots kept in zoological garden is described; it manifests itself as abrupt mass death of the birds. Deposits of necrotic changes with the occurrence of intranuclear inclusions of the Cowdry A type were found in the liver of dead parrots. The virus was isolated on chick embryos and tissue cultures of chick embryo cells. The bioassay was performed on Psittacus undulatus. The occurrence of herpesvirus nucleocapsids and complete virions in the infected tissue cultures was detected by means of electron microscopy.
