The tissue of cervical cancer and HSV-2 infected baby rabbit kidney (BRK) cells were studied comparatively by electron microscope. In 2 out of 12 samples from patients with cervical carcinoma, some virus-like particles were observed in the cytoplasm or intercellular space. Some particles seemed to be enveloped by endoplasmic reticulum. According to their size, structure and morphology, these particles resembled the herpes simplex virus. The relationship between the discovery of herpes simplex virus-like particles in tissue of cervical cancer and the development of this cancer is discussed.
