In this new era of accountable care and population health, large provider organizations are looking for new ways to predict diseases in their population, especially for people with diabetes. Although diabetes has been associated with the incidence of obesity, many diabetes patients are not obese. However, we find that just living in a household with one or more obese biologically related family members is a major risk factor for diabetes, even after accounting for all the other traditional risk factors.
