The antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, and antimicrobial activities of Verbascum Thapsus L., known as great mullein, (an important medicinal plant containing different biochemical compounds including sesquiterpenes, flavonoids, saponins and lignins) were determined. There is not much data, to our knowledge, in this respect.
The antioxidant activities of V. Thapsus were investigated by the DPPH (2, 2- diphenyl- 1-picrylhydrazyl) method. Using GC-MS, the presence of different anticarcinogenic products including 1-hexzanol (2.11%), 2-hexene (1.95%), etc. was determined in the ethanolic extract of V. Thapsus. The antimicrobial activities of V. Thapsus were determined by the minimum inhibiting concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) methods using the Grampositive and -negative bacterial strains.
The least concentration of V. Thapsus L. ethanolic extract (50 mg/l) resulted in only 21.26% inhibition of DPPH free radicals, however, the concentrations of 300 mg/l resulted in almost the highest inhibition (91.31%) of DPPH free radicals. The antioxidant activities of synthesized antioxidant BHT at the concentration of 300 mg/l or higher were similar to the antioxidant activities of V. Thapsus L. ethanolic extract. Both the isolated and the standard Gram-negative bacterial strains were more tolerant to the V. Thapsus ethanolic extract, compared with the Grampositive bacterial strains. Bacillus cereus was the most sensitive bacterial strain among the tested bacterial strains.
The medicinal plant V. Thapsus L. can be used for the treatment of different diseases, such as cancer and infectious diseases.
大烟花(Verbascum Thapsus L.),又名毛地黄,作为一种重要的药用植物,含有多种生化化合物,包括倍半萜、黄酮类、皂苷和木脂素等,具有抗氧化、抗癌和抗菌活性。就我们所知,这方面的资料并不多。
采用 DPPH(2,2-二苯基-1-苦基肼基)法测定大烟花的抗氧化活性。利用 GC-MS 法,测定大烟花乙醇提取物中不同抗癌产物的存在情况,包括 1-己醇(2.11%)、2-己烯(1.95%)等。采用最低抑菌浓度(MIC)和最低杀菌浓度(MBC)法,测定大烟花对革兰氏阳性和革兰氏阴性细菌的抗菌活性。
大烟花乙醇提取物的最低浓度(50mg/L)仅对 DPPH 自由基的抑制率为 21.26%,但浓度为 300mg/L 时对 DPPH 自由基的抑制率几乎达到最高(91.31%)。合成抗氧化剂 BHT 的浓度为 300mg/L 或更高时,其抗氧化活性与大烟花乙醇提取物相似。与革兰氏阳性菌相比,分离的和标准的革兰氏阴性菌对大烟花乙醇提取物的耐受性更强。在测试的细菌菌株中,蜡状芽孢杆菌是最敏感的细菌菌株。
药用植物大烟花(Verbascum Thapsus L.)可用于治疗癌症和传染病等多种疾病。
