Abstract

BACKGROUND

Squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) represents the most common type of malignancies in the oral cavity (O) and esophagus (E). Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) plays a key role in numerous processes that affects tumor growth, progression, differentiation, invasion, metastasis, and inhibition of apoptosis. In this study, we wanted to investigate the EGFR expression in OSCC and ESCC cases. As well, another purpose was to observe if there exists any relation between its expression and clinicopathologic factors. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study which compares the EGFR protein expression between OSCC and ESCC.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This cross-sectional study was performed on 46 paraffin blocks (23 OSCC and 23 ESCC). The expression of EGFR was evaluated with immunohistochemical technique. Data analyses were done using SPSS software by Fisher's exact test. Significance was assigned at < 0.05.

RESULTS

Out of 46 patients, 25 cases (54.3%) were male and 21 (45.7%) were female. Seventy-eight percent of OSCCs and 73.9% of ESCCs showed high expression of EGFR. No statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups ( = 0.73). There were no statistically significant correlations between EGFR expression and clinicopathologic factors (age, gender, grade, and stage) of OSCCs ( > 0.05). A statistically significant correlation was found between EGFR expression and stage in ESCCs group ( = 0.006).

CONCLUSION

No significant correlation was found between the expression of EGFR protein in OSCCs and ESCCs. High expression of EGFR was observed in ESCCs with Stages II, III.

背景

鳞状细胞癌(SCC)是口腔(O)和食管(E)中最常见的恶性肿瘤类型。表皮生长因子受体(EGFR)在影响肿瘤生长、进展、分化、侵袭、转移及抑制细胞凋亡的众多过程中起关键作用。在本研究中,我们想调查口腔鳞状细胞癌(OSCC)和食管鳞状细胞癌(ESCC)病例中EGFR的表达情况。此外,另一个目的是观察其表达与临床病理因素之间是否存在任何关联。据我们所知,这是第一项比较OSCC和ESCC中EGFR蛋白表达的研究。

材料与方法

本横断面研究对46个石蜡块(23个OSCC和23个ESCC)进行。采用免疫组织化学技术评估EGFR的表达。使用SPSS软件通过Fisher精确检验进行数据分析。显著性设定为<0.05。

结果

46例患者中,25例(54.3%)为男性,21例(45.7%)为女性。78%的OSCC和73.9%的ESCC显示EGFR高表达。两组之间未观察到统计学上的显著差异(=0.73)。OSCC的EGFR表达与临床病理因素(年龄、性别、分级和分期)之间无统计学显著相关性(>0.05)。在ESCC组中发现EGFR表达与分期之间存在统计学显著相关性(=0.006)。

结论

OSCC和ESCC中EGFR蛋白的表达之间未发现显著相关性。在II、III期的ESCC中观察到EGFR高表达。
