Rectal trauma, although uncommon, may result in severe morbidity and even in mortality. Proper treatment plans, including the management of the rectal injury, the use of intravenous antibiotics and drains, rectal washout, and careful closure of surgical wounds, will usually lead to a favorable outcome.
