Abstract

AIM

To determine the early effects of excess weight on renal cortical stiffness in children and adolescents using point shear wave elastography (pSWE).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One hundred and forty-six overweight and obese children (43.2% male; mean age, 12.6±2.9 years: range 4.3-18) and 48 lean children (27.1% male: mean age, 12.4±3.4: range 4.8-18.9) were included in the study and control group, respectively. pSWE measurements of the two kidneys were performed. The mean value of shear wave velocity was compared between groups.

RESULTS

The mean shear wave velocity was 2.79±0.53 m/s for the control subjects and 3.09±0.59 m/s for the overweight-obese subjects. The differences between the two groups were sta-tistically significant (p=0.001). There was no correlation between shear wave velocity and age or depth. A positive correlation was found between shear wave velocity and body mass index, body mass index-standard deviation score.

CONCLUSION

Renal cortical stiffness was higher in children with excess weight than in lean children. This study is the first attempt at applying pSWE to investigate the early adverse effects of excess weight.

应用实时剪切波弹性成像(pSWE)技术,探讨儿童青少年超重对肾脏皮质硬度的早期影响。

材料与方法

本研究纳入 146 名超重和肥胖儿童(43.2%为男性;平均年龄为 12.6±2.9 岁,范围为 4.3-18 岁)和 48 名正常体重儿童(27.1%为男性;平均年龄为 12.4±3.4 岁,范围为 4.8-18.9 岁),分别作为研究组和对照组。对两组儿童的双肾进行 pSWE 测量,比较两组间剪切波速度的平均值。

结果

对照组的平均剪切波速度为 2.79±0.53 m/s,超重肥胖组为 3.09±0.59 m/s,两组间差异具有统计学意义(p=0.001)。剪切波速度与年龄或深度无相关性,但与体重指数、体重指数标准差呈正相关。

结论

超重儿童的肾脏皮质硬度高于正常体重儿童。本研究首次应用 pSWE 技术探讨超重对肾脏的早期不良影响。
