Thermoregulatory effector mechanisms during sleep are state-dependent: changes in gains and thresholds occur in the transition from waking to synchronized sleep, while thermoregulatory responses are suppressed altogether during desynchronized sleep. Data on respiratory and circulatory regulations confirm the paradigm of desynchronized sleep as a state characterized by disturbances in homeostatic controls.
