The concepts awareness, wakefulness, and arousal are compared, and some neurophysiological and neuropsychological studies of awareness are described. The different studies are suggested to show that awareness depends on neural activity of the cerebral cortex, but the relationship between cortical activity and awareness is found to be conditional. Consequently, the presence of awareness can only be established with behavioural methods.
