By embedding regulated genetic circuits and cell-free systems onto a paper, the portable biosensing platform showed the possibility of detecting environmental pollutants, namely arsenic ions and bacterial quorum-sensing signal AHLs (-acyl homoserine lactones). This platform has a great potential for practical environmental management and diagnosis.
