The effect of the chondroprotective substances glycosaminoglycan polysulfate (GAGPS) and chondroitin sulfate upon the genetically fixed osteoarthritis of C 57-black mice has been investigated. The histological preparation showed that at the age of 13 months all mice suffered from more or less severe articular changes resembling an osteoarthritis of the knee. In comparison to the control group, however, the degree of severity and the frequency of the arthrotic changes were significantly lower in the GAGPS groups. Moreover, a dose-dependent effect of GAGPS was found.
