The present study compared home hemodialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, (CAPD) patients and their spouses to matched groups of hospital dialysis patients in order to examine the psychosocial adjustment to the various modes of dialysis treatment. The psychological distress was smaller in the patients on home treatment, but no significant difference was found in their vocational and social rehabilitation. The spouses of patients on home treatment manifested similar scores of psychological distress as spouses of patients on hospital dialysis, but reported somewhat less social problems.
