Investigation of the Chemical Composition, Antimicrobial, and Antioxidant Activity of Endemic Onosma halophila Boiss. & Heldr.

Abstract

The Onosma halophila Boiss. & Heldr. belongs to the Boraginaceae family and it is endemic species from Turkey that distributes in Salt Lake (Tuz Gölü) and the surrounding salty steppes. In this study, the chemical content, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activity of endemic O. halophila were determined for the first time. Thirty-one components were identified by GC-MS analysis in O. halophila. Antimicrobial activity was tested against a total of eight microorganisms, including three Gram-positive, three Gram-negative bacterial strains, and two fungal strains, using the Micro dilution technique. The obtained extracts showed strong antifungal and antibacterial activity. The MIC value of extracts samples against the tested strains ranged from 15.625 to 125 μg/mL. In addition, it was determined that the extracts had different levels of antioxidant activity. The IC50 values were determined 45.20-1760 µg/mL for DPPH radical scavenging assay, 3.125-1016 µg/mL for HO radical scavenging assay, and 147.12-1837 µg/mL for superoxide radical scavenging assay, respectively. As a result, it has been determined that O. halophila has the potential to be used in complementary medicine and various ethnobotanical fields in future due to the important components it contains.

长茎蓝钟花(Onosma halophila Boiss. & Heldr.)属于紫草科,是土耳其特有的物种,分布于盐湖(Tuz Gölü)和周围的盐化草原。本研究首次测定了长茎蓝钟花的化学物质含量、抗菌和抗氧化活性。通过 GC-MS 分析,在长茎蓝钟花中鉴定出 31 种成分。采用微量稀释法,对共 8 种微生物,包括 3 种革兰氏阳性菌、3 种革兰氏阴性菌和 2 种真菌进行了抗菌活性测试。所得到的提取物表现出很强的抗真菌和抗菌活性。提取物样品对测试菌株的 MIC 值范围为 15.625-125μg/mL。此外,还确定了提取物具有不同水平的抗氧化活性。DPPH 自由基清除试验的 IC50 值为 45.20-1760μg/mL,HO 自由基清除试验的 IC50 值为 3.125-1016μg/mL,超氧自由基清除试验的 IC50 值为 147.12-1837μg/mL。因此,由于其所含的重要成分,长茎蓝钟花有望在未来的补充医学和各种民族植物学领域得到应用。
