Chronic illnesses should be combated totally by social medicine. This fact was not recognized until the first half of this century, and it was not until after the Second World War that steps were taken towards realizing this goal. The following are examples of the visible progress that has been made to date: professional organizations for rheumatologists; intensification of research; founding of clinics, spas, and therapy centers; active social medicine leagues; support for patient self-help organizations. All of those involved in combating rheumatism must work together.
