The study of quality of life in cancer patients has several objectives which must be considered separately, even if they are combined in the same work: The descriptive finality constitutes the first mandatory step of any further study and must take into account all the psycho-social parameters involved in cancer disease and its treatment. The causative finality attempts, on basis of correlations between these parameters, to define the psycho-social factors involved in carcinogenesis and disease course. The therapeutic finality includes the study of quality of life in medical decision making, psychotherapeutic intervention as well as evaluation of various treatments aimed at improving quality of life of cancer patients.
